DescriptionThe SPICE platform must foster the discovery and exchange of distributed context information. Hence knowledge sources must adhere to a service-independent interface for querying, retrieving, and storing context information. Each knowledge source delivers its knowledge in a common formal semantic representation. The resulting system must be dynamic, scalable, and loosely coupled.Furthermore, the Knowledge Sources should be able to provide contextual information upon request (through a polling mechanism), and by subscription (through a publish/subscribe mechanism).
RationaleContext information in the real-world will be gathered from multiple sources. Sensors data and low order context information is distributed by nature and cannot be managed well by centralized systems. Knowledge sources, be it either retrieving knowledge from storage, sensors or deriving it by means of reasoning algorithms, must be discoverable for knowledge consumers and exchange knowledge via agreed upon means (syntax and semantics). Contextual information and knowledge will be presented at the interface in the internal semantic representation. The knowledge consumer will be responsible for translating the information to its own representation and vice versa.

Environment
Other_infoeT7: location (-updates) via access network provider; location (-updates) via GPS receiver. eT8: relevant information is searched from other context sources that may reside in another administrative domain; Get information on transportation means is an example of polling; while monitoring the environment and sending a notification once the user reaches the area of interest is an example of subscription
