| Title | Multimodal and multi-device delivery of services |

| Description | The SPICE platform MUST be able to dynamically adapt the way in which a user interacts with an interactive multimedia service and select the mode of interaction that "best" fits the user's current situation (e.g., depending on whether he's driving or walking). The SPICE platform MUST also be able to respond to changes in that situation and change the mode of interaction accordingly. This may mean changing the input or output modality of the service (e.g., output modality from audio to text and input modality from gestures to voice commands) or changing the set of devices that the platform uses to provide the service (e.g., move the audio part of a multimedia service from a TV set to a cell phone so that the platform uses two devices to render the service). The SPICE platform MUST also hide these changes as well as the particularities of a user's DCS from the service. The above behaviour is endorsed by the SPICE Multimodal Delivery and Control System (MDCS). |
| Rationale | (1) Improve a user's "experience" with interactive multimedia services by dynamically fine-tuning the mode of interaction (2) Enable service providers to easily offer their interactive multimedia services in heterogeneous environments by hiding the particularities of a user's DCS from the service as well as changes that occur in a user's current situation. |
